Therapeutic Recreation in Parks
Our first T.R.I.P.
took place May 21st - May 23rd, 2010.
Respite continues to be the number
one need for families across all of America. Resources for
respite are not as plentiful as some might think to cover this
vast need. Recognizing this dilemma the Arkansas
Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health is
introducing a new program that will strive to meet a portion of
this need in a unique, visionary setting.
The
therapeutic recreation in parks program a.k.a. T.R.I.P. is a
program that provides weekend respite opportunities to
individuals with an array of disabilities. The program is
designed on the principles of therapeutic recreation where
individuals will be assessed and goals and objectives written to
address specific needs representative to the individual’s plan
of care. Respite continues to be the number one need of
families and caregivers across the state and around the
country. The T.R.I.P. program will provide another choice for
Arkansans. The program will take place in Arkansas’ state and
national parks. The idea behind the venue is that state and
national parks allow for an integrated opportunity for the
respite participants. Individuals will acquire skill sets where
upon completion of the trip, the individual could return with
their family or caregiver to the park visited and have knowledge
of the available services they would like to participate in.
The T.R.I.P. program is revolutionary as we take the
participants to typical recreational venues and give them the
information necessary to return on their own.
The program is designed and created by
Phillip Pengelly, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist
(CTRS) with over 25 years of experience working with individuals
of all abilities. Most of Mr. Pengelly's experience is in
the camping and community based area.
